Born and raised in Harlem, New York City, longtime professional dance artist and now retired and well-sought after public intellectual on African American Cultural Production, Professor Emerita, C. S’thembile West was tenured in the Departments of African American and Women’s Studies at Western Illinois University. West has had an extensive career as an educator and scholar teaching and publishing across the humanities and social sciences, including in the Journal of Feminist Studies in Religion, The Journal of the American Academy of Religion, Women’s Studies: An Interdisciplinary Journal, and Freedomways: A Quarterly Review of the Freedom Movement. As a dance journalist she has published in Attitude: The Dancers’ Magazine, The Amsterdam News, Mississippi Enterprise, The Philadelphia Inquirer and The Philadelphia Weekly (formerly the Welcomat); and, has also written about the eclectic musicians who make the genre of Jazz music dynamic in Jazz Spotlite News, NYC. In her four decades as an educator she has taught at Bryn Mawr College, the City University of New York, Cottey College in Nevada, Missouri, Florida International University, Temple University and the NYC Board of Education.
