I met her after finishing a long run. I was sweaty and a bit disheveled and delighted with myself as I was walking home. She and I happened on one another and ended up walking for several blocks together. We were two women walking in the same direction at night on fairly unpopulated streets in a quiet neighborhood. The temperature had dropped so that it was a cool summer evening. As I was not fully prepared for the cooler temperatures, I was taking swift strides with the aim of shortening the time it would take me to get home. As I was about to pass my would be walking partner, she turned towards me and said, goodnight. Her tone was disarmingly warm and cheerful. I smiled and said, goodnight. We ended up walking and talking together for 15 minutes. She had recently returned from several weeks in Italy and missed the sense of friendliness she experienced there. She hoped to hold on to that sense of friendliness by continuing the ritual of impromptu joy-filled greetings to strangers she had embraced during her time in Italy. Before I realized it I was near home, and no longer feeling the intensity of the cool wind. Indeed, it was a good night.
